The role of governors
As governors, our role is to:
- Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school
- Hold the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its students, and the performance management of staff, and
- Oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure its money is well spent.
We do this through our governing body meetings where we discuss specific areas of the curriculum and plans for development - we challenge proposals brought to the meetings by the senior leadership team and see ourselves as 'critical friends'. We also meet to provide oversight of finances, staffing and performance data. Each governor is linked to a particular department or area (such as learning support, gifted and talented and safeguarding) and we take the opportunity to visit the school as often as we can. We try to understand more by meeting with middle leaders throughout the year in 'Meet the Governors' sessions and by attending the GSCE exam analysis meetings in September.
As a governing body, we absolutely support the school motto of ‘all different, all equal’ and try to bring our individual skills to support the school in serving the local community and helping all our students to be the best they can be.
